Dream Lake: This long and narrow lake is definitely dream like in quality (if you have nice dreams). It is the middle lake on the way to Emerald Lake, situated at an altitude of 9,900', and only 430' above the Bear Lake trailhead. It is about 5.5 acres and 14' deep, accommodating the Cutthroat trout with ample head room. It has some beautiful weathered Limber pines along its shore line, apparently growing right out of the bedrock in places.
The lake is frozen solid by December and alternately has a blanket of deep snow and a shiny surface of ice thanks to the variability of the winds here. It is a fairly easy hike of 1.1 miles from Bear Lake, except for the rather steep approach to the Lake which can be a moderate challenge for skiers and snowshoers alike.
Early names for this long lake were Emerald Lake and Lake Ursula (for the bear). Its final name was given in 1913 by George Barnard during the second annual outing of The Colorado Mountain Club. He led several outings in the area, which was not a small feat from Denver. Mr. Barnard helped name many of the Park's features and was a leader in the area, enticing young people to enjoy the mountains.#
